the-reason-you-should-always-apply-even-if-you-think-you-arent-qualified

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard someone say that they found a job that sounds great, but they don’t meet all the requirements and therefore won’t apply, I could quit my day job right now.

This is the absolute WORST thing you can do when job hunting.

You should ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS apply, even if you don’t meet all the requirements.

Now, I’m not saying you should apply for an Executive-level position if you only have 2 years under your belt. It’s important to not be totally ridiculous here.

But I am saying that if there are one or two things you’re missing off of their list, you should always still try.

The job I currently have now said that it required 5 years of agency experience.

Do you know how many years of agency experience I had?

None.

Zero. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

But I felt like I fit many of the other qualifications, and I believed I could convince them that I would overcome the lack of agency experience through hard work.

Obviously, this tactic worked, since I am now gainfully employed.

This wasn’t the first time I had done that. There were many, many other jobs for which I applied where I didn’t meet all of the qualifications. There were some that never called me back, but there were many that did.

See, the thing is – what do you have to lose if you apply?

If they never call, then you’re not any worse off than before you applied. But if they DO call, then you have the chance to get a dream job that you might not have thought about before.

I will also add the caveat here that you shouldn’t lie and act like you have qualifications you don’t. But do tell them what you have that you think makes up for the ones you may lack.

Many of the people that write the job descriptions, unless they have a huge HR department, are sort of spitballing what they think they should have or require. Unless you’re applying to be a doctor or lawyer, or something that obviously requires a specific degree and training, there’s no reason you shouldn’t at least give the job a chance.

Bottom Line: Don’t Sell Yourself Short. Apply Anyways.
